I don't really have any experience with "raw" denim (sounds uncomfortable), but this answer touches on a long term debate amongst jean aficionados. Yes, you can wash denim. If you are like me, you'll stain them (I'm not very talented at eating or drinking). Eventually they will start to smell. Washing denim is inevitable. Washing carefully is the key to preserving your jeans: turn each pair inside out before you put them in the washer, wash in cold, and I recommend using dark wash detergent. Please wash your jeans!
